“Threshold” is an architectural medium, which divides and connects space. Urban context is the relationship between “the city” and people.
My interest in threshold lies in the ambiguous moment in which one can inhabit and experience transitional space. To create a threshold which creates spaces in an urban context I chose to design a hostel in Albert Street, Auckland that will act as a threshold connecting Albert Street and St. Patricks Squares. It will activate the inner-city context in a way that celebrates the relationship between transients, local inhabitants and city workers from the hectic business area through to an urban green square. By building a hostel at this site I want to encourage the use of St Patricks’ Square to enable a public thoroughfare.
